Promundo News – 5th Edition

In this January edition of Promundo News, we provide an overview of the activities conducted by Promundo at the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013.

We also present the main findings of the IMAGES study (International Men and Gender Equality Survey), developed in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2012, which reveal alarming data on sexual and gender-based violence in this country: 48% of the men interviewed stated that they had perpetrated some sort of physical violence against their partners, while 53% of the women surveyed claimed that they had been victims of violence at the hands of their partners.

In the interview section, Henny Slegh, Promundo’s representative in the Great Lakes region of Africa, discusses the challenges of conducting the IMAGES research in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In addition to describing her experience in the field, Slegh offers a moving reflection on ethical and moral issues related to research in conflict settings and areas marked by extreme poverty.

In the section on Brazil, we highlight the Promundo’s campaign to promote gender equality in the workplace that was developed in IEComperj, a Petrobras’ enterprise comprised of 1000 employees; and news on the research on security perceptions in four communities in Rio de Janeiro.

Promundo wishes a 2013 full advances for gender equality and social justice for all.
