Promundo receives award for project in Santa Marta.
September 2, 2010
Promundo is honored to have received the Regional Prize for the Nike/Changemakers competition entitled “Changing Lives Through Football”. Promundo has been implementing a project in the low-income community of Santa Marta in Rio de Janeiro over the course of the last year. The project sought to prevent violence against women by working with men. It utilized a football tournament of young and adult men to mobilize men to participate in workshops. A campaign was developed and implemented in the entire community with posters, community newspapers, community events, music, and other campaign materials. The championship also served as a community event to galvanize the community and to distribute campaign materials. We are very honored that this innovative project has received recognition and hope that this methodology can be adapted and replicated. Promundo’s project was one of 293 initiatives from 60 countries around the world. According to Changemakers, they “honored you (Promundo) and your colleagues for the outstanding demonstration of innovation, social impact, and sustainability”. The prize included a cash prize of US$ 10,000 which Promundo will utilize to promote similar initiatives or adaptations of the project.
Our entry will be permanently archived and open to the public on Changemakers. More information about all of the finalists, including Promundo, is available here http://www.changemakers.com/football/winners
