The International Girls Day, celebrated on October 11th, draws attention to the importance of promoting girl’s empowerment and changes in gender norms which reinforce inequalities in opportunity and development between boys and girls. In 2013 this date was used to encourage education as a crucial step for empowerment and emancipation of girls and women, as well as the construction of a more equal future.
With this in mind, this issue of Promundo News has an interview with Samantha Wright, director of the global campaign Girl Rising.
Through the dissemination of the feature film “Girl Rising”, this campaign seeks to raise funds for the promotion of girls’ education. The film presents the story of nine girls around the world told by celebrated writers and voiced by renowned actors, such as Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.
Additionally, we present the article “Child marriage: a global issue”, by Giovanna Lauro and Margaret E. Greene, which sheds light into this important issue that affects the lives of over 14 million girls worldwide.
Finally, we include some highlights of recent projects and activities developed by Promundo, namely the Project on Women’s economic empowerment in Rio de Janeiro and Recife and the Seminar Men, Peace and Security, which will take place in Washington-DC at the end of October.
