Promundo Wins Inaugural Womanity Award to Transform Gender Norms in Lebanon
May 23, 2014
On May 20th, Promundo and ABAAD were announced as the recipients of the first-ever Womanity Award from the Womanity Foundation. With the award’s support, Promundo and ABAAD will collaborate on a pilot project to engage young men displaced by conflict in Lebanon in the prevention of violence against women.
Promundo and ABAAD will partner to adapt Program H, a comprehensive curriculum that encourages young men to question rigid gender norms and adopt non-violent attitudes and behaviors. The three-year project will begin in Lebanon with potential for expansion to the broader Middle East and North Africa region.
“We were deeply impressed by the well-documented proposal submitted by Promundo and ABAAD for the Womanity Award,” said Yann Borgstedt, Founder and President of the Womanity Foundation. “Our aim was to identify an effective approach to prevent violence against women and to scale up its impact by supporting its adaptation to a new context. We have a very promising plan ahead of us with our two laureates!”
The Womanity Foundation announced the award recipients in an online ceremony that attracted hundreds of viewers and featured a discussion with high-profile speakers about engaging men and boys in the prevention of violence against women.
Promundo’s and ABAAD’s work will also be showcased on June 10, 2014 at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, hosted by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Angelina Jolie at ExCel London.
“We’re thrilled to be the recipients of this inaugural award and to receive the tremendous opportunity to partner with Womanity and ABAAD to engage young men in Lebanon to prevent violence against women and other forms of gender-based violence,” said Joseph Vess, Senior Program Officer at Promundo. “The challenges of preventing violence against women are particularly acute in post-conflict settings, so we are looking forward to combining our experience of working in areas such as the former Yugoslavia and central Africa with ABAAD’s expertise in Lebanon to develop an intervention that effectively meets the needs and challenges of the context. It’s a very exciting opportunity.”
Program H is a methodology developed by Promundo to engage young men in changing inequitable and violent norms related to manhood through a combination of group education and community campaigns. It has been implemented in over 25 countries worldwide, and multiple studies have shown its positive impact in transforming harmful gender norms and preventing gender-based violence.
ABAAD, who will partner with Promundo, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement and empowerment of women in Lebanon and in the Middle East and North Africa.
